That's one league on Yahoo! (no live game stats) and one on ESPN. 10 teams, 1 point per reception (PPR) to even out the value of those WR's and TE's with the RB's, and head-to-head games to determine league standings.

Oh, and of course, these are free leagues. Buy your own add-ons if you want, or we can just post our own version of a draft prep kit here to help out the folks that need one, but it's free to play.

Hey fantasy football fans!! I couldn't wait for August so I started now. I have a league setup on Yahoo! (10 teams), message me if you'd like to join (family-friendly league, so okay for the kids, too). First timers are welcome. This league offers 1 point per 10 yds for passes (most are 1 point per 25 yds this year).

This year I have to say that the ESPN free FF system is looking pretty sweet! I have one team there.
http://games.espn.go.com/frontpage/football

For those of you looking for good free leagues, last year I played at CBS Sportsline and it worked great:
http://football.sportsline.com/

I have a buddy playing on the NFL site. I think it uses the same servers (but re-branded) as CBS Sportsline uses.
http://football.nfl.com/

I found a very helpful stats site for the NFL:
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/

EARLY SEASON FANTASY FOOTBALL MAGAZINE / DRAFT KITS
I bought four of the magazines this year to compare them. Here's my take:

1) NFL.com Fantasy Football 2007 Preview (LaDainian Tomlinson on the cover)
I liked this one. Nice color charts and player profiles, friendly articles on tips, analysis, full interview with LT, and a bit of history and humor. Fewer charts and more fun articles. This is the one I bring out for friends or read on the bus.

2) Fantasy League Football 2007 (Carson Palmer on the cover).
Consistent layout, useful charts. A good choice if you aren't going have the Internet handy to research previous seasons. Also a cool league schedule template (which team vs. which each week for 8, 10, 12 and 14 team leagues). And a player index with page number references! These guys know how to build a reference guide.

3) Beckett Fantasy (RotoWorld.com) (LaDainian Tomlinson on the cover)
Nice article on 10 draft theories, some good charts, decent insight in the team previews and extended info on the top players, including a "what's changed" section for each player. This makes sleeper research and rank-drop decisions waaaay easier. Mock draft, too.

4) Footballguys.com Fantasy Football 2007 Strategy Guide (Willie Parker on the cover)
I gotta hand it to these guys for their stats, charts, and deeper strategy articles. I see these guys get slammed on some sites around the net, but I admire their stats-mashing minds. Their Face-Off and Spotlight pages devote a whole page of high & low side of a single player, and it's great info (on Matt Leinart, Tony Romo, Reggie Bush, Travis Henry, Willis McGahee, Randy Moss and Larry Fitzgerald). Plus an interview with WIllie Parker. Good issue.

Of course, all these mags have similar rankings and cheat sheets, depth charts and team previews; all are very functional draft kits. Each has certain (different) insights on sleepers and hampering situational changes for power players. It's nice to get a couple different points of view.

Hope that helps kick things off to a good start for you... let's rock this tribe this year!

Hey gang!

It's fabulous football time once again. And that means a fresh Fantasy Football season. Yeeeah!

While seeking out who has the coolest free leagues this year, I find that Yahoo! is running a great set of tools and public leagues - great for first-timers. I joined a public league over there and I'm pretty pleased with how well the auto-draft came out. Our league teams are well-matched, and the tools give good visbility. The only downside to Yahoo! is that they only give you the live-stats tool for free for the Sept 10th games - after that, you'll have to buy it ($9.95 for the whole season - not bad).

My Yahoo! team drafted over night. I woke up this morning and my team was ready to go. Our teams are already matched up for "head to head" games this weekend. Cool! So far, I'm loving the visibility and ease of use of the tools, reports, and controls on the Yahoo! leagues.

The other place I created a team (and a league) is at CBS Sports (http://www.sportsline.com). They are offering free live-stats all season long as well as free fantasy football teams and leagues. I created a league that doesn't draft until Thurs, Sept. 14th, which - as you know - is after the first game of the season. This means everyone in the league gets to see how the sleepers perform, which Bell (Mike or Tatum) the Broncos are starting, measure how last year's stars are opening the year, and drop Sunday's injured players. This is a whole different draft priority - but it is still an auto-draft.

HOW DO I LEARN HOW TO PLAY?
If you are asking yourself that question, a public league like Yahoo! is perfect for you. The basic answer is, "jump in and play - it's the best way to learn!" If you don't mess too much with the auto-draft default order, your team will work out fine. If you do decide to pop your favorite home-team players to the top of your draft preferences list, then you'll have fun but you probably won't win the fantasy football games. Either way is fine, the important thing is to jump in and try it.

One other resource: you'll find half-a-dozen or so different magazines specializing in Fantasy Football on news stands now (this is prime fantasy football draft week, September 54th-9th). Glance through them and pick the one that resonates best with you for whatever reason. They all contain a ton of data that'll be a great reference thru the process.

Here's a tip: If you have never played Fantasy Football before and you pick up a magazine, don't expect to understand everything in it. In fact, even after you have signed up in a league and set up your draft choices, you still won't understand how it all works yet - and that's okay. Once your team has been auto-drafted, and you've read the magazine, then things will all start to come together. After you spend some time looking through your league, the other teams, and what happened in the draft, more will make sense. Once you see other player starting to offer trades, it'll make more sense. And, of course, after this weekend's games, when you can go back in and see your teams points, it'll all come together.

So, no panic. The fun is in the process of discovering and learning. Jump in!

If you think my team isn't too strong, you're right. I just snuck in the playoffs with this week's win. It's a whole other season from here though...

GO DECEPTICONS!!!

How is everyone else doing in your respective leagues?
And oh yeah, good luck!

I was worried going into the weekend... I'd given up on McNabb the week before in favor of Brees, but still had to start him due to Brees's bye...

This week I took a couple of gambles... First I started Marion Barber in lieu of Julius Jones... Cha-Ching.... Jones had more rushing yards but Barber ended up with 2 TDs... Second I started Ernest Wilford at WR over Houshmababa... Cha-Ching... again Houshybaby had more yardage, but Wilford had the TD...

And of course I had my moneymakers... and they paid off BIGTIME... Brees has a career day, 4TDs and 339yds... Larry Johnson had 2 TDs and 211yds...

Ok, so I have a pretty deep WR core, and we score 2 pts for Receptions, 1 pt for 10 yrds, and 6 for a TD, and we start 3 WRs. I have Joey Galloway, Reggie Wayne, T.J. Housh, Ashlie Lelie, and Amani Toomer. My game this week can determine my second place standing so I HAVE to win. I figure I should start Galloway and Wayne for sure, but I'm getting heartburn on my third receiver. T.J. has been solid and I start Palmer at QB, but he's going against Indy. Lelie can be OK, but he is going against the Jets, and Steve Smith got shut down vs. the Jets last week, so I'm a little wary of that one. A Toomer looks like a solid start, but I'd just like some other perspectives though......

I think the Jags are still on the rebound from last week, Taylors knee is still bothering him and Denver is likley to stuff the box until Byron can beat them. Any thoughts?

All the premier RBs were taken by my turn (I don't consider M. Faulk premier anymore), so I took D. Culpepper with my first pick, and Randy Moss with my second. In the third Round I took Curtis Martin, and Kellen Winslow in the fourth, New England's D in the 5th and Larry Fitzgerald in the 6th. The rest of the draft got me St. Louis' D, Ron Dayne, Lee Suggs, David Akers, Rashaun Woods, Jeff Garcia (in the 11th Round, what were they thinking?!?), Troy Brown, Jon Carney, William Green (tolerable handcuff, this one), and L.J. Smith.

Not bad, overall, especially in a league where we start 1 QB, 1TE, 1K, 1DEF, and two each RB and WR.

Personally, as far as real football goes, I think that sudden death overtime is fine (All these teams whining about not getting their offense on the field should nut up and learn to play defense) and as far as the play offs go, I really hated it when 10-6 was pretty much a guaranteed play off birth and 9-7 was likely.
I used Draft Sharks, approximately $35 a year, for the last two years. They have excellent daily reports, a nice system that you plug your scoring system into to rank players across positions using the value based drafting method, and a good message board.

I was dissappointed with the speed of their updates this year, and their predictions were WAY off a LOT more this year than last. I kind of kept an eye on some their competitors who outperformed them in expert leagues and such and was impressed with what I saw from Fantasy Mastermind. I may switch to them.

Anyone have experience with them or anyone else?

So who else made it to the Promise(d?) Land? I was in 3 leagues (2 were $$$ leagues) and I'm in the Fantasy Bowl in the league that really means the most for me (and my wallet). OK, here's the situation (insert appropriate DJ Jazzy Jeff/Fresh Prince lyric here)...

I've got:

Pennington
T.Hasselbeck
K.Collins
---------
T.Barber
T.Jones
T.Hambrick
---------
Harrison
Holt
J.Smith
Hakim
T.Walters
---------
S.Graham
---------
Pats
Seahawks

Obviously, I've gotta start Pennington but because of that, I can't go with the Pats D since they're playing each other. But that's OK because Seattle is playing the lowly Cards at home. My WR situation is a non-issue... my top 3 are as good as it gets. But here's the tricky part... my RBs. T.Jones is definitely getting the nod, playing Atlanta at home and runnning well as of late. But who do I go with my #2 back? Do I stick with Tiki, whom I've started every week this season and helped me get to 10-3? Or do I go with Hambrick, who's been running well lately too, vs the Giants? OR... do I throw everything off and pick up DeShaun Foster (who will probably start), especially if the Panthers sit S. Davis? Decisions, decisions, decisions....

What would y'all do?

Oh, and I'll be going up against a bitter rival who will start:

Bulger
E.James
Barlow
K.Robinson
Andre Johnson
Charles Lee
J.Wilkins

I understand it's nearing the end of most leagues playoffs, but my question is, Clinton Portis, AKA "God in cleats", just got injured and he's listed as questionable. Do I start my back up even if he's okay at gametime? I'm thinking, ofcourse you start him, but I do have Duckett, and the ATrain, who both scored for me, and I'm 1 game away from the championship in both head to head and overall points. Here is my team: starters are John Kitna, Donovan McNabb, Portis, Duckett, ATrain, Chad Johnson, Randy Moss, Andre Johnson, the Chiefs D, Jason Elam. Backups are, Joey Harrington, Jerry Porter, Correll Buckhalter and Josh Brown. I guess I just want to know on a scale of 1-10 what do you think of my team? And, to say, it's nice to know there are others out there. Is anyone else in 2 leagues? Talk about confusing.
